Faye Carol is a Star. She has amazing range, knowledge and grace.

Faye Carol is one of the most amazing ladies you will ever meet.  She is grace personified.  She electrifies the room with her presence.  When she walks into a place you feel that you are in the presence of greatness.  She is quiet and humble yet, she has an amazing way to uplift people’s spirit.  Soul music in the Bay Area would not be the same without her.

Tomorrow, Thursday  October 11, 2018,  she will be performing in Mill Valley at the Mill Valley film festival.  This is a “can’t miss event”.  Although you may want to check to make sure you still can get tickets.  She will be performing at the Sweet Water Music Hall.

Another way to experience her is to take her 4 week music lesson.  They are a Bay Area treat not just for people who want to learn how to perform in front of crowds, but also for those who want to sound great at a wedding, bar mitzvah, or at the next family gathering.   It is also wonderful for people who enjoy learning about music.  Ms. Faye Carol has encyclopedic knowledge about American music. She leads with grace, knowledge and soul.

Fun Fact: March 13, 2018 was declared “Faye Carol Day” by the city of Berkeley.

Rolando test-hikes his health in Oakland

October 2, 2018

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

Given the spectrum of crazy things happening in the world, I should count my blessings.  I’m still dealing with shoulder issues with Kaiser and am finally getting over that nasty bug.  That was a challenge given my 6 gigs in 5 day schedule last week!  I did some test hikes in Oakland and am definitely feeling better.

My debut last week at the Casa Bella Event Center in Sunol was such a hit that they’ve invited me back to play each Thursday this October.  The staff and public were great to play for, and the tacos were really good!  They’ve only been doing this for a few weeks now, so come and enjoy the rustic elegance of this fine property.  Details below.  This Thursday October 4, I’ll be playing indoors 5-8pm in the Event Center.  Let’s discover this gem together.  www.sunolscasabella.com

I’m also looking forward to this Saturday October 6, about 8:30-11pm when I return to Havana in Walnut Creek, this time with the delightful Sonya Jason, the saxophonist who has played with Sheila E. and the Brothers Johnson.  We’ll be doing a unique Latin-jazz fusion with some classic Grover Washington and Gato Barbieri thrown in.  This is only the 2nd time we’re doing this here, so don’t miss it!  Details below.

The duet series continues on Friday October 12 with the great Latin percussionist-vocalist Estaire Godinez, and then Saturday October 27 with the Grammy-winning Latin percussionist-vocalist from Venezuela, Omar Ledezma.  It all happens at Havana in Walnut Creek.  It’s turned into quite a scene!  Details below.

I also have a smattering of Maria, Maria gigs this month at both locations, starting this Friday night October 5 from 6-9pm in Danville.  That’s always a fun hang.  See below for the other dates and locations.

See you at the show!

Ciao,

Rolando

Rolando a few years back in Kauai

September 12, 2018

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

I had turned down FOUR gigs this week, two of them private, because I was scheduled to be in Kauai this week.  Unfortunately, two potential hurricanes had the same idea and were working their way to the islands to hit just after I would have, so I had to pull out at the last minute.

So I’m still here in Oak-town catching up on work and clients, and resting my back and shoulder a bit before  jumping back into the fray on Saturday September 15 for a special public appearance at Havana in Walnut Creek, with the great Janice Maxie-Reid on keys and vocals.  We don’t get to do this often, so I’m really looking forward to playing in duet with her again in this really fun room!  We’ll probably include a couple tunes for the Queen of Soul.  Details below.

And the other great duets lined up include the amazing Carlos Reyes on Saturday Sept 22; and Santana rock guitarist Carlos Hernandez on Friday Sept 28all at Havana in Walnut Creek.  These are all exciting and unique combinations with different repertoires, so if you come to each of them, you will be thoroughly entertained each time and amazed at the different talents each musician brings to the table!  (And maybe by the versatility I possess to shift with the styles each musician brings to the show!)  Details below.

 See you at the show!

Aloha,

Rolando

August 21, 2018

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

I completed an exhausting but satisfying week of public and private events, including an all day wedding in the Oakland Hills Saturday (with a lot of stairs!), the last part done with my talented friend Sonya Jason on sax.  It’s been a great feeling making deep musical connections with new multi-ethnic audiences from around the world.  Lots of love, happiness and new friends.

Speaking of friends, my lovely friend Chenda Chhi, who is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, has created a wonderful organization, The Coral Tree Foundation, which aims to help the Cambodian children, descendants of the Killing Fields, to overcome poverty and receive an education.  Tomorrow, Wednesday August 22nd from 6-9pm in Menlo Park, they’re throwing a Cambodian Food & Fine Wine Tasting event.  I encourage you to look into this.  It’s a worthy cause and a heart-warming opportunity to do something good for the world while having a great time doing it.

I am unable to make it, but I arranged for my former partner of Passion & Grace, guitarist-vocalist-song writer Carlos Godinez, to perform a set for the event.  You’ll meet wonderful people, enjoy expertly poured libations by a gorgeous, talented bar tender, enjoy Cambodian food, bid for exotic and wonderful goods and services and hear Carlos’ great music.  I wish I could go!!!  All the details are below.  If you can’t make it, feel free to make a donation.  http://www.coraltreeeducation.org/upcoming-events/.

I’ll mostly be doing private events this week except for this Saturday night, August 25th when I return for only the 2nd time in about 1½  years to Piacere in San Carlos on solo guitar and voice.  Spread the word and lets have some fun in the bar!  Details below

And remember, on Saturday September 1st, I’ll be returning to the Marriott Walnut Creek Lobby Lounge and Bar for the last time of this year!  I told you before, scheduling this one has been a challenge.  I greatly enjoyed my debut here a couple weeks ago.  It was a great room with great people!  The acoustics enhanced my rich, full tone to an attentive audience and together we transformed the room into a little concert hall with guests from all around the world. This will be the last one I’m doing this year, so please put it in your book and don’t miss it.  Spread the word.

See you at the show!

Ciao,

Rolando

Where are my Patriots? Rolando Morales and Carlos Reyes Saturday at The Vine and more

Republican Patriots: Where are you???
Republican Patriots: Where are you???
Republican Patriots: Where are you???”

Former CIA Director John Brennan’s tweet after watching Trump’s Helsinki news conference where Trump chose not to condemn Russia for it’s cyber operation to meddle in our elections, and  chose instead to condemn the FBI for investigating it.

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

Well, America voted for a man who would shake things up.  Mission accomplished!

Now seasoned veterans on both sides of the aisle seem equally enraged by his actions and words.  We’ve known for some time now that the democrats have been short of spine, voice and message.  Concurrently, the republicans have been scrambling to “explain” his words and actions and remained in lock step support with his actions and increasingly questionable policies.  Party first, country second.

Where are the real patriots?  Isn’t it time we all say enough is enough?  Isn’t it time we all acknowledge he doesn’t really care about putting America first?  He really only values himself.  Even when confronted with undeniable evidence of Russian interference, he perceives only that it threatens the legitimacy of his own election win, despite the report saying there was insufficient evidence that the meddling affected the election outcome.  There’s a big, black hole in him that he just can’t fill.

The world was replete with memes and cartoons that touched on the events of the last couple days.  Pretty good ones, too!  The one I posted here is comparatively tame and artful against so many of the angrier, bawdier ones that are so prevalent.

Through it all, I’ll keep pushing forward with my music, bringing what I hope is an uplifting, personal experience we can share together.  I won’t be doing as many public shows the rest of this month, but I do have a great one happening this Saturday July 21st from 8-11pm at The Vine in Danville, when I’ll be playing with the great violinist Carlos Reyes.  We don’t do this often at this venue, so don’t miss it!  Details below.

There are a few more things happening, including my rare duet with Latin rock guitarist from Carlos Santana, Carlos Hernandez, making his debut at Havana in Walnut Creek on Friday July 27.   Details below.

See you at the show!

Ciao,

Rolando

Rolando Morales Calendar for July 2018 at Maria, Maria WC, San Carlos Thurs, Havana WC with Janice Maxie-Reid and more

Janice Maxine-Reid joins Rolando Morales at Havana, Walnut Creek on July 13
Janice Maxine-Reid joins Rolando Morales at Havana, Walnut Creek Friday

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

What a whirlwind of a week!

After doing my last gigs of June, I flew down to So Cal for a few days to see my mom and visiting brother and family from Michigan.  There I closed some last-minute gig offers.

Last Thursday I flew back in time for The Vine.  The following morning I said goodbye to my friend at her funeral who I wrote you about last week.  It was a beautiful, heart-felt service.

From there, I went to the Mission in San Francisco to play with old and new friends at Cafe La Taza.  It was a wild scene and our quartet blew the walls out of the packed house.  They were watching from the sidewalk through the windows because they couldn’t get in.

Then on Saturday I learned of more life-threatening issues impacting more close family in Southern Cal.  Then that night I kicked it strong with saxophonist Sonya Jason at Havana.  By the end of that day, I was emotionally drained.

Sunday I slept.  I could finally go to the store and then did a challenging, healing hike at Lake Chabot, where I confirmed yet another last-minute gig.

And that one is today, Monday.  I’m off to play with Carlos Reyes and the band for a great private concert in Moraga.

And two more last-minute shows happen on Tuesday July 10 at Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek, and then my surprise return to Piacere in San Carlos on Thursday July 12.  All the details are below in the Calendar.

And remember I’m finally reuniting with the amazing keyboardist-vocalist Janice Maxie-Reid who makes her debut on Saturday July 13 at  Havana in Walnut Creek as I continue my new duet series at that venue.  All details below.

Plenty more coming up in the month including a duet appearance featuring the great violinist Carlos Reyes at The Vine at Bridges on Saturday July 21 from 8-11pm in Danville.  Details below.

Please join me as we continue to celebrate our journey  together.

Ciao,

Brandi Carlile echoes Joan Baez in more ways than one

When you are depressed, get help. People care! Many more people than you may realize, care about you.

Brandi Carlile has a most amazing voice with perfect elocution. Her voice is beautiful and haunting. It stays with you after you heard it. A bit of a siren call like Joan Baez. You can’t unhear their voices. Once you did you know that voice.

Another way that Brandi is impactful like Joan Baez use to be is that she sings ballads that actually talk about things that we care about. Feelings and issues. Relationships gone wrong and the feelings we may experience as we work them out.

When you are depressed, get help. People care! Many more people than you may realize, care about you.
When you are depressed, get help. People care! Many more people than you may realize, care about you. (Official version… click on photo to play)

“By the way, I forgive you.” is related to a friend of Brandi’s who committed suicide when they were in High School. “Hold out your hand” is about gun violence. Brandi supports the effort by Seattle school children who don’t want to get shot. The students behind “March For Our Lives” in Seattle made a video and Brandi decided to support their effort with her song “Hold out your Hand.”

On facebook Brandi exclaims:

“These young people are asking for a change – are you listening?

Responsible gun laws are on a spectrum and as much as we’d like it to be, it isn’t black and white. Some of these kids hunt with their parents, some of them are enlisting into service and will carry a weapon in defense of your way of life. Don’t make the mistake of broad brushing what they’re asking for.

We can’t allow ourselves to be divided and conquered any longer by organizations that profit from our division. There can be and there IS a way that we can create change from the center of the debate.”

A singer songwriter activist who is also amazingly talented like Brandi, doesn’t come along very often.  Let’s support her by purchasing her new album.

Or, even better go see her live.  It surely will be an experience that stays with you. You can catch her at the Mondavi Winery in Napa, CA on July 14th, and at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA on August 22nd, 2018.   She is actively touring the entire country.  Check her website for dates near you.

B.B. King Blues Club & Grill – GUITAR PASSIONS feat. Sharon Isbin, Stanley Jordan & Romero Lubambo  – Nov 20, 2014
New Multi-Genre Music Venue “Sony Hall” Open in New York City Spring 2018

Midori Tomita  from Sony announced: “We are thrilled to be teaming up with Blue Note on this new music venue set to open this spring and honored to have it be known as ‘Sony Hall.’ It will serve as a staging ground for recording content, testing new and exciting technology, promoting emerging artists, and more. We look forward to engaging with young music fans and those of all ages and continuing to deliver unique and high quality music experiences through this newest venue.”

It is rumored that Sony Hall will feature technology like for instance the “Interactive CUBE” which is an entertainment experience that invigorates the senses by incorporating projected images, sounds, lights, and vibrations on a giant cube. By forming two screens, one of which is transparent, into the shape of a cube and projecting images on them, guests inside the cube will feel as if the images are floating in midair. The settings are changed for the performances to allow the audiences enjoy a vast variety of interactive games and experiences while enjoying the music.

Located in the heart of New York’s Theatre District (235 W. 46th St at the Paramount Hotel, in the space previously known as Diamond Horseshoe), Sony Hall is scheduled to open in Spring 2018.

The venue is owned, operated and programmed by Blue Note. Sony Hall will present world renowned performing artists across all music genres at capacities of 1,000 standing and 500 seated, with a full-service restaurant and bar.  Sony Hall will be equipped with Sony’s technologies, integrated throughout the 12,000 square-foot venue to deliver enhanced entertainment experiences to fans. Grand opening plans, headliners, and additional venue details will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to the opening of Sony Hall, Sony will sponsor the annual Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York City, scheduled for June 1-30, 2018. Established in 2011 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club New York, Blue Note Jazz Festival has annually grown into one of the largest music events in New York City, featuring over 100 events in 10 venues over the course of 30 days (June 1 through 30 annually). With nightly events at BNEG venues such as Blue Note Jazz Club, Highline Ballroom, BB King Blues Club, among other locations throughout the city, past festival headliners include Aretha Franklin, The Roots, Wyclef Jean, Natalie Cole, Brian Wilson, and Stanley Jordan.

Sony innovations paired with Blue Notes’ experience operating entertainment properties around the world is a truly unique partnership that will be the ultimate experience for fans, young and older.  Just imagine Stanley Jordan in an AR environment.  Wow!

You know my brother Frank is hurting right now after losing every valuable possession he has to the Santa Rosa fire last Monday night from his Mobile Home, 3 vehicles, and his beloved work shed that all burned down to the ground. My family is in the midst of developing a plan to help get him and his wonderful Lady Linda back on their feet. Like my brother, I hope those who have had any level of loss has a very close circle of family and friends to be there for mental and financial support.

Hopefully by this coming weekend the dust, or more like the ashes and particles, will settle and life will begin to come back better and stronger than before for all of those who have suffered any degree of loss, sad or emptiness. Although fires are devastating, the charred remains somehow turn into a means of refresh.

Rolando Morales at Barone’s, The Vine at Bridges, Seahorse, and C’era Una Volta,

October 10, 2017

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

Is everyone gagging on the thick, toxic fumes?  Feeling a little sick?  And the fires are bad, too, huh?

It’s been hard keeping up with the the daily barrage of events.  The floods, the hurricanes, the earthquakes, the saber rattling, more sexual oppression, insults launched from the White House and Congress…  And now the fires in our back yard.  Everyone’s on overload.

My private gigs have slowed down a bit which affords a moment to breathe, even if it was smoky this morning…

If you need an escape from the madness this weekend, join me at Barone’s Restaurant in Pleasanton this Friday Oct 13 and leave your superstitions at the door.  We don’t have time for that nonsense.  DO bring your appetite, as the menu here is amazing.  And I’ll be there in the intimate bar on solo guitar and voice.  Details below.

Then on Saturday night October 14, I’ll host the long-awaited return of my dear, talented friend Janice Maxie-Reid to The Vine at Bridges in Danville.  She is the superb keyboardist-vocalist with the 4-octave range who has performed with none other than Stevie Wonder.  We always light it up when we play here together.  The last time was about 3 or 4 months ago, so don’t miss it!  Details below.

And remember that next week Saturday October 21st, my band returns to The Sausalito Seahorse.  Not only will we have a stellar band including the great Carlos Reyes on violin and Paraguayan harp, Danilo Paíz on percussion and vocals, Dave Flores on drums, and Yours Truly on guitar and guitar synth and vocals; We’ll also feature a very, very special surprise guest on bass.  We can’t really advertise him due to contractual restrictions.  Let’s just say we’re all so excited to be able to play with him again and look forward to seeing him on stage again with Tower of Power.  So his picture in the poster is a big Question Marc.  I wonder if he’s arriving in a VW?  Make your reservations at the Seahorse at (415) 331-2899.

Check out below what’s also happening with my return to Havana in Walnut Creek, Maria, Maria in Danville, and Alameda’s own C’era Una Volta.  Details and dates are below.

Come out and say hi and let me know you’re okay.

Ciao,

Rolando
