Rolando Morales Calendar for July 2018 at Maria, Maria WC, San Carlos Thurs, Havana WC with Janice Maxie-Reid and more

Janice Maxine-Reid joins Rolando Morales at Havana, Walnut Creek on July 13
Janice Maxine-Reid joins Rolando Morales at Havana, Walnut Creek Friday

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

What a whirlwind of a week!

After doing my last gigs of June, I flew down to So Cal for a few days to see my mom and visiting brother and family from Michigan.  There I closed some last-minute gig offers.

Last Thursday I flew back in time for The Vine.  The following morning I said goodbye to my friend at her funeral who I wrote you about last week.  It was a beautiful, heart-felt service.

From there, I went to the Mission in San Francisco to play with old and new friends at Cafe La Taza.  It was a wild scene and our quartet blew the walls out of the packed house.  They were watching from the sidewalk through the windows because they couldn’t get in.

Then on Saturday I learned of more life-threatening issues impacting more close family in Southern Cal.  Then that night I kicked it strong with saxophonist Sonya Jason at Havana.  By the end of that day, I was emotionally drained.

Sunday I slept.  I could finally go to the store and then did a challenging, healing hike at Lake Chabot, where I confirmed yet another last-minute gig.

And that one is today, Monday.  I’m off to play with Carlos Reyes and the band for a great private concert in Moraga.

And two more last-minute shows happen on Tuesday July 10 at Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek, and then my surprise return to Piacere in San Carlos on Thursday July 12.  All the details are below in the Calendar.

And remember I’m finally reuniting with the amazing keyboardist-vocalist Janice Maxie-Reid who makes her debut on Saturday July 13 at  Havana in Walnut Creek as I continue my new duet series at that venue.  All details below.

Plenty more coming up in the month including a duet appearance featuring the great violinist Carlos Reyes at The Vine at Bridges on Saturday July 21 from 8-11pm in Danville.  Details below.

Please join me as we continue to celebrate our journey  together.

Ciao,

Rolando

Rolando Morales May 2018 Performance Calendar

To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable.

 ~ Beethoven

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

Passion is definitely something I bring to every performance.  I can’t help it.  It’s like breathing for me.  The music requires it.

I’ll be bringing that passion all over the Bay this month, and especially this weekend.  Cinco de Mayo happens this Saturday, the day Mexico commemorates their victory over the much larger, better equipped French army at the Battle of Puebla.

And I’ll be commemorating it TWICE on May 5 at TWO separate events.  The first happens at Maria, Maria in Danville this Saturday May 5 from 1-5pm, out on their patio.  I’ll be playing for 4 hours out there, providing a huge sound track for you celebrants.  I might be joined by talented friends at different parts of the day.  We’ll see how it goes.  They’ll also have a 6-piece band for the evening until midnight.  Yeah, it’s a big deal.  Details below.

After that, I shoot over to the North Bay to make my debut at The Tavern on Fourth in San Rafael from 9:30-Midnight to continue the Cinco de Mayo celebration.  They convinced me to swing by and bring the Latin side of my repertoire to their newly renovated bar.  If you’re in the North Bay, join me so we can make this a semi-regular venue.  Details below.

More highlights of the month include my return to The Vine in Danville on Saturday May 12where I’ll feature the great rock guitarist who played with Carlos Santana.  We haven’t done this in a couple years, so don’t miss it.  It’s a lot of fun!  Details below.

And make your reservations for our big Saturday May 19 show at the Sausalito Seahorse with another great lineup featuring Carlos Reyes, Estaire Godinez, Celso Alberti, David Belove and Yours Truly.  Details below.

And there’s much more in your new May Calendar.  See you at the show!

Rolando Morales Update for September 2017

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

I’ve been working day and night putting tech and everything else together for some big private and public shows throughout the Bay Area and beyond.  Thursday we’re doing a big private show up in St. Helena.  Then a couple days up near Lake Tahoe for more private shows.  Then all the way down again to Woodside for yet another private event.  It’s good to be in demand!  I put on four new tires on my car to ensure a safer week.

I broke up the intense prep work with a couple short but majestic hikes through the Oakland Hills near my house.  It’s nice to see Oakland continue to reveal her surprises.  Redwoods, eucalyptus, lakes…  Am I in the Sierras?  Naw, it’s just Oakland.

The public shows won’t begin until next week when I do my first Friday night Danville show at Maria, Maria in almost half a year on September 8.

But the noteworthy show is a great little festival happening on September 92-6pm.  My friends at the Women Entrepreneurs of Los Altos invited my band to play for the WE Vibe Block Party on the 100 Block of First Street in Los Altos.  I’ll be there with my All-Star Quintet putting on two shows.  We’ll also have my favorite flamenco troop “Caminos Flamencos” putting on a passionate show.  Details.

Other highlights this month include my duet on Mexican Independence Day, 16 de Septiembre with my Latin percussionist-vocalist and Sista-From-Anotha-Mista, Estaire Godinez at the Pairings Cellars in Pleasanton.  This will be the first time I do a duet at this venue and you know we’ll light it up.

I’ll also be doing a special duet on Saturday September 23 at The Vine at Bridges with the great violinist Carlos Reyes.  This will be the first time we’re able to do this together here in 2 years, so don’t miss it!  Details below.

Last, be informed that I’m debuting on Fridays September 22 AND 29 at Havana in Walnut Creek, a fine Cuban restaurant, bar and now, Live Music venue.  I’ve only done private off-site work for them in the past, and this will mark the first public in-house appearances in our history.  Swing by!  Details below.

And speaking of Walnut CreekMaria, Maria has abruptly ended their Sunday afternoon shows about 5 weeks earlier than usual.  This year’s strange weather, alternating between unusually cold and windy to intolerably hot has kept patrons off the patio, hurting their sales, so I’ll just do occasional weekends at both their restaurants depending on our schedules.  No more Sundays this season.  So now you know.

See you at the show!

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.  ~Bill Vaughan

¡Feliz Año Nuevo, Mi Gente!

I have the impression a lot of us stayed up to ensure the old year left.  We made it through a wild, tough year together. We said goodbye to too many beloved cultural icons; from Prince to Bowie to Ali and too many others, from early January to just a week ago, as well as to too many friends and family.  We witnessed turmoil and political resistance in the streets and welcomed in a new American protectionist leadership who’s message is thinly veiled in racism.  I lost my vision in my right eye and just recently gained most of it back.  We’ll all need to keep two good eyes open on this new year!  Let’s hope for the best, but speak out loudly when the time warrants.

I’m starting my first week of the year with three nice public appearances, all at locations I haven’t seen in a while.  This Thursday Jan 5, I return to Piacere in downtown San Carlos from 8-11pm.  We had a blast there closing out 2016 with many Peninsula friends I hadn’t seen in years.  Lots of great energy, singing and dancing.  Let’s keep the ball rolling and swing by!  Details below.

Then on Friday January 6, after three months away, I finally return to Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek from approx 6-9pm.  Time flies when you’re busy…  Let’s reconnect!   Details below.

And on Saturday January 7, after FOUR months away, I finally return to Maria, Maria in Danville, also approx 6-9pm.  This is my shout-out to my Far East Bay friends.  Swing by!  Details below.

Remember too, to make your reservations for Saturday January 14, “An Evening with Rolando Morales and Carlos Reyes” at the Sausalito Seahorse with our World Class band.  We’ll have my musical monsters ready to go: bassist David Belove; Latin percussionist/vocalist and Grammy winner Omar Ledezma; Brazilian drummer Celso Alberti; and of course Paraguayan harpist/violinist Carlos Reyes and Yours Truly on guitar, guitar synth and vocals.  It’s next week, so make your reservations now.  Details below.

Here’s the rest of your brand new January Calendar.    See you at the show!

Sept 13, 2016

Hola, Mi Gente!

I wrapped up another jam-packed week with an intimate patio performance on Sunday September 11 at Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek. The full, attentive patio (and even those inside) were receptive to an impromptu musical tribute to the significance of the day. I allowed the gentle wind to select the songs from my book for my 9-11 segment and shared them with the audience. From Stevie Wonder to John Lennon to Djavan and beyond, the wind chose songs I hadn’t done before and the lyrics, mood and passion were perfect for the moment. Very special.
One never knows what’s going to happen from gig to gig. Every day is different. I enjoyed a great private concert up in Oakville on Friday with my talented friends Carlos Reyes, Janice Maxie-Reid, Estaire Godinez, Gary Brown and myself. We created stirring and entertaining moments.
And on Saturday, at Pairings Cellars, a unique version of my Trio — drummer Celso Alberti, bassist Dewayne Pate and myself— surprised and excited the Pleasanton audience with forms of music they weren’t used to seeing there! Hell, I even surprised the band with some of the tunes I called out. Several we had never done before, but I wanted to take advantage of the talent. We hit them strong.
This week I have some big private weeknight events with my band in store, alongside solo public appearances Tuesday at Maria, Maria in Danville, at Don Pico’s Friday, Barone’s Restaurant on Saturday Sept 17 and Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek on Sunday. Details below.
Remember, too, to make your reservations for the annual fund raiser put on by my beautiful friends at Sionfonds to benefit the children and their families in Haiti. It happens next week on Sunday Sept 25 from 4-8pm at Venga Paella in Oakland. These people really do exceptional work, have big hearts and kick it all off from right here in Oaktown. It’s a great night out with authentic paella dinners, sangria and other libations, Haitian crafts, and I’ll be providing the musical sound track. I urge you to click on their site to learn more and make your reservations. www.sionfonds.org.

We miss you Toots Thieleman

Hola, Mi Gente!

Today we lost yet another musical icon, this time in the world of jazz.  The diminutive Belgian Toots Thielemans, a jazz harmonica player, guitarist and whistler, was indeed a musical giant.  He lived to the age of 94 and played almost as long.  “Why would I retire?” he once said.  “I do what I love.”

His sweet, unique sound came from a  place he described as somewhere “between a smile and a tear.”  What an amazing life lead by an amazing gentleman!  We’re most fortunate that he shared his unique gift with the world for so many decades. I spoke with him and saw him perform several times over the years . He was kind, humble, honest and funny. He was Quincey Jones’ favorite musician and one of the world’s musical treasures. We’ll continue to enjoy his passionate legacy. We love you, Toots.

I just completed six days in a row of private and public gigs all over La Bahia, from San Jose to Walnut Creek.  They included some beautiful locales, sensuous Russian girls who wouldn’t stop dancing and even a good amount of tears from appreciative listeners.  It was a really good week that left me totally spent by the time late Sunday night rolled around.

I’m wrapping up my active August with some more lovely private events and four public shows.  This Friday Aug 26 from 8-11pm, I do my very first solo performance at the Pairings Cellars, the brand new Pleasanton night spot.  I’m looking forward to unveiling my diverse repertoire to that new audience.

I also have another fun duet show coming up this Saturday August 27 at The Vine at Bridges from 8-11pm with the charismatic Estaire Godinez, the Latin percussionist-vocalist who played with George Benson and Prince.  She lights it up!

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.”
"That depends, Sir, " said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."
Aaahh… The good old days, when low-cutting political insults required wit and eloquence.

August 1, 2016

Hola, Mi Gente!

July’s political theater has helped the month scurry by.  When coupled with the positive experiences of so many private events I played through last week, the month seemed but a blink of an eye.  (Which reminds me…  For those of you who have been asking, yes, my right eye is so much improved, but I still have an intermittent white veil that obstructs part of my vision, but that should go away within a few more weeks.)

Through it all, my August Calendar suddenly reveals itself tomorrow, Tuesday August 2nd with my first appearance in almost 6 weeks at Maria, Maria in Danville from 6-9pm.  That will be my only public appearance of the week, as I will be doing only private events for the next  week.

After I return, there will be plenty of public shows to chose from throughout August.  Some highlights include an exciting version of my Trio performing on Saturday August 13 at the brand new Pairings Cellars in Pleasanton.  The band will feature the great Paraguayan violinist Carlos Reyes, Grammy-winning Latin percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma and myself on guitar, guitar synth and voice.  Details below.

Then on August 17, I’ll be doing a very rare Wednesday duet performance for you South Bay fans at the San Jose Fairmont in the Lobby Lounge from 9-Midnight.  I’ll feature the delightful violinist Ms. Patricia Weiss.  She has shared the stage with the Gipsy Kings.  Details below.

There’s much more to come.  I’ll  see you at the show!

Hola, Mi Gente!

If there has ever been a time for us to collectively channel our inner Martin Luther King, that time is now.  Too many times now, listening to the radio while driving to or from a gig, I’ve heard heart-rending, breaking news of the latest violence inflicted in another American city.

One of the songs I’ve added to my repertoire of late, sadly, has been Stevie Wonder’s “Love’s In Need Of Love Today.”   One of the lines goes: “Hate’s goin’ round breaking many hearts.  Stop it please before it’s gone too far.”

I’ve had some special moments performing these kinds of songs for receptive audiences at Wente Vineyard, The Vineand even Maria, Maria in Walnut Creek.  Some spoke to me with tears in their eyes on the breaks of how they were moved by the songs or appreciated what I wrote in these newsletters.  It seems we all want the madness to stop.  But the few with the demented will and the means to act perpetuate the violence. Better to remember Dr. King’s words:

“We must learn to live together as brothers, or perish together as fools.” March on Washington-1964

If you’re looking for healing energy and a fun escape from the news, remember that my Trio debuts  this Saturdaynight, July 23 at a brand new Wine Bar, Pairings Cellars on Main Street in downtown Pleasanton, as part of theirGrand Opening month.  We’ll have a ball playing in this intimate space with my great trio featuring the percussionist/vocalist from Prince, Estaire Godinez; the great bassist from Pete Escovedo, David Belove; and I’ll be there on guitar, guitar synth and voice.  Details below.  Don’t miss it!
