100 Year Celebration of the ACLU – now more important than ever.

Join Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha on Saturday March 30 to celebrate the 100 Year ACLU anniversary at Jack London Square at 3:30pm

“Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha”

March 28, 2019

Join us to celebrate Year 100 of the ACLU at Jack London Square this Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 3:30pm with a concert by Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha

March 29, 2019, Jack London Square, Oakland, CA, at 3:30 pm Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha will perform to celebrate the ACLU 100 Years celebration, which will go on the entire weekend. See entire line up here.

This weekend’s Bay Area Celebration is part of a national tour. https://www.aclu100.org/aclu-100-experience/ which was started at SXSW. With celebrations in Phoenix, and Los Angeles. The key focus this year is to encourage everyone to join the effort to remind US citizens and voters that “Voting is a Right, not Privilege.” The Gerry Mandering and Voter Suppression have affected the countries leadership in a way that the majority of the voters are not heard:

Voting rights have come under attack across the country.  States have passed laws that have made it harder for people of color, the elderly, students, and people with disabilities to cast a ballot. Experience an interactive exhibit about the many barriers erected throughout American history to prevent people from voting.

Learn how you can help ensure that everyone has the ability to exercise their right to vote.

There are many other ways to give. You may designate your support for the ACLU of Northern California (not tax-deductible) or the ACLU Foundation of Northern California (tax-deductible):

  • Honor a friend’s birthday, wedding, or graduation with a special gift
  • Celebrate the life of a loved one with a memorial gift
  • Make a gift of stock
  • Leave a legacy. Make a planned gift to keep the ACLU strong after your lifetime.

If you are interested in making a gift to support LGB T rights by giving a gift to the FrontLine Fund, please contact us. For assistance, please contact the Development Department at giving@aclunc.org or (415) 621-2493.

It takes a village to raise a child and a community to shape and strengthen a city. The Oakland, CA is known to have a population of which 38% hold secondary degrees. This is largely due to the effective education successes, strong family support, and a community that believes that everyone is created equally and should be treated as such under the law. Naturally, we need to reinforce these values on a daily basis to continue our history of civil rights successes.

Our History

The ACLU-NC was alone in standing with Fred Korematsu and against the forced detention of Japanese-Americans during WWII, in a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. We dared to oppose obscenity laws in the prim 1950s, defending Lawrence Ferlinghetti for selling Howl, the groundbreaking book of poetry, in his San Francisco City Lights bookstore. In the years after 9/11, the ACLU pushed back on a wave of bigotry and fear mongering to protect the civil rights of Muslims and people of Middle Eastern and South Asian decent. In recent years, as discrimination has shifted to target Latinos and others perceived as “foreign,” the ACLU has stamped out anti-immigrant laws around the country and challenged unlawful policing in immigrant communities in California. We may be best known for litigation, but through our history the ACLU-NC has been powered by the passion of our activists. The organization was forged through the courage of trade workers and labor organizers in the 1930s. We aided the growing civil rights movements of the 1960s, providing legal protection to campaigns by African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, as well as anti-war protestors and LGBT activists. Over the decades, battles have been fought and won by ACLU activists in fifteen chapters across Northern California and student groups on California’s university campuses, from the activists who launched the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley in 1964 to the UC Davis students who endured pepper spray while exercising their free speech rights in 2011.

The ACLU of Northern California is one of the largest ACLU affiliates in the nation with nearly 170,000 members. We have a critical role to play. We must use our decades of experience in impact litigation, legislative advocacy, and fearless organizing to fight these un-American policies and protect our most cherished rights and freedoms. We are the resistance. Join us.

Did you know that prisoners get paid only $1.45 per day to put their life on the one fighting fires?

“Michael Tchong’s Latest Book, “Ubertrends — How Trends And Innovation Are Transforming Our Future Released”

Ubertrends - How Trends And Innovation Are Transforming our Future by Michael Tchong - March 25, 2019

“Michael Tchong’s Latest Book, “Ubertrends — How Trends And Innovation Are Transforming Our Future Released”

Las Vegas, March 22, 2019 — Michael Tchong, a renowned speaker, trend forecaster, and startup entrepreneur launches his third book, entitled “Ubertrends — How Trends and Innovation Are Transforming Our Future.” “Ubertrends” tracks civilization’s leading edges that are vaulting us into a radically transformed future.

As author Michael Tchong explains in his book, “Ubertrends form in the eye of the storm. As the forces collide with the future, they shapeshift society. When channeled with innovations, Ubertrends unleash a torrent of tsunamis.”

Aimed at business executives, startup entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, financial analysts, as well as anyone who needs a stronger grasp on a developing future. Published by Ubercool Innovation, “Ubertrends” succinctly analyzes and illustrates some of the biggest waves cascading through society today.

It traces these Ubertrends back to seemingly inauspicious historical incidents that play a much better-understood role in the formation of today’s culture.

These waves are responsible for a host of effects rippling through society. Ubertrends is a well-illustrated compendium, featuring some 273 images, that will help readers connect the dots, providing more context to how the future is unfolding.

For example, did you know that our busy lifestyles are the result of an Ubertrend that has roots in developments that took place in Massachusetts in 1946?

This Ubertrend, Time Compression — The Acceleration of Life, is the hurricane force behind the success of both FedEx and Starbucks, while propelling a whole host of other trends, from energy drinks to yoga.

Unlike most trends, Ubertrends change population values, which contributes to permanently altered consumer behavior.

The eight Ubertrend and innovation forces are:
Casual Living — The Evaporation of Decorum
Digital Lifestyle — Marriage of Man and Machine
Generation X-tasy — Been There, Done That
Fountain of Youth — Rejuvenating Body, Spirit and Environment
Time Compression — The Acceleration of Life
Unwired — Untethered and Unfettered
Voyeurgasm — I Like to Watch
WAF — Ascent of Woman
Innovation — Reinventing Business and Life
Ubertrends - How Trends And Innovation Are Transforming our Future by Michael Tchong - March 25, 2019
Ubertrends – How Trends And Innovation Are Transforming our Future by Michael Tchong now available.

“We live in an age that requires constant innovation,” says Michael Tchong. So gaining tactical market insights is more critical than ever. To shed light on the forces driving disruption, readers are taken on a spellbinding, roller-coaster ride through the “landscape of now.” “Ubertrends” shows how a multiplicity of phenomena, primarily technology trends, is reshaping society in often remarkable ways.

Join us on April 4th for “A Night at Yoshi’s Oakland featuring Jonah Melvon & Adesha”

Join us for “A Night at Yoshi's Oakland featuring Jonah Melvon & Adesha" - the Inaugural Peralta Colleges Foundation for Study Abroad Fundraising Event

Inaugural Peralta Colleges Foundation for Study Abroad Fundraising Event

March 21, 2019, Oakland, CA, The event will be held at the renowned jazz supper club Yoshi’s Oakland on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 7:30pm – 10pm featuring entertainment by local sensations Jonah Melvon featuring Adesha. Jonah and Adesha are more than Oakland natives who share a passion for the arts, they also happen to be siblings. This year they decided to bring the household back together again, as they tour on Jonah’s latest record “RainWater Project”, with teasers from his first record “This is the Year”. This soulful, lyrical, warm-hearted dual, is proud to be bringing their home away from home experience, to listeners worldwide.

The Office of International Education and Peralta Colleges Foundation of the Peralta Community College District will be hosting its Inaugural Study Abroad Fundraising Event, “A Night at Yoshi’s Oakland featuring Jonah Melvon & Adesha”, to raise monies for local students to support and expand their horizons in their quest to become global citizens in the 21st century.

The sponsors and listeners support provides scholarships to worthy students so that they may have the resources for this once in a lifetime experience.  In 2019, the Peralta Colleges are planning to offer up to 11 programs in Japan, Taiwan, Belize, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, Egypt, London, China, Ghana and Costa Rica (http://web.peralta.edu/international/study-abroad).

It takes a village to raise a child and a community to shape and strengthen a city.

The Oakland, CA is known to have a population of which 38% hold secondary degrees. This is largely due to the effective education successes.

The Peralta Community College District helps fuel the economic engine of East Bay, supplying the region with a trained workforce in essential fields such as nursing, automotive technology, office administration, mechanics, biomanufacturing, bookkeeping, carpentry, food service and restaurant management, to name a few.  This workforce helps build and maintain a vibrant, economically diverse region that meets the present and future needs.

According to the California Community Colleges system, if an additional two percent of California’s population earned associate degrees and an extra one percent earned bachelor’s degrees, the state’s economy would grow by $20 billion.  These educated workers would generate state and local taxes of $1.2 billion a year, and create 174,000 new jobs in California.  Students receiving a degree or certificate from a community college see an 86 percent increase in their wages, from $25,600 to $45,571, three years after earning their degree.   For every dollar spent on economic and workforce development programs at community colleges, there is a $12 increase in California’s business income and employee wages.

According to the Institute for International Education (IIE), fewer than 10% of American college students participate in international study programs, and less than 25% of those students are from underrepresented minority groups. Since many of our students are from low-socioeconomic families, studying abroad has never been a major priority for them. The study abroad experience often is a life-changing event that can provide a student with a new found sense of confidence or independence, a new foreign language skill, an increased ability to work in diverse work environments and most importantly the opportunity to explore new cultures. The Study Abroad program has been shaped by visionary and author, Drew Gephart and his dedicated team.

Welcome to the Jonah Melvon and the Rainwater Project – together we are “Bridging the Gap.”

Artist Highlight: Tony Lindsay and his new hit song “Something beautiful”

Tony Lindsey’s version of a beautiful world with advice to get there.

Our San Francisco Vibe is “something beautiful”

In 1980, Lindsay arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area from Kingston, New York, and continues to perform with the first band he formed Spangalang, who have opened for Curtis Mayfield, Tower of Power, Gerald Albright, Jr. Walker and the Average White Band.  He was one of four singers who traveled with “Dancing with the Stars,” the road tour version of the popular TV Dance show, which began in 2005. Lindsay joined Dancing with the Stars on three of the first four seasons as well as touring with Santana. Other bands that Tony helped form and still performs with are The Soul Soldiers, Black Magic, and the Ray Charles Project.

In 2015 Tony started to fully commit on his solo career. His 5th and current solo CD “Something Beautiful” is starting to fully express his sound and vibe.
Previous solo efforts are” Different Moods” in 1995, “The Message is Love” in 1997, “Tony Lindsay” in 2005, and “Memoirs” in 2014.

Tony Lindsay's new Solo Hit "Something Beautiful" makes you happy and feel that everything is alright with the world.
Tony Lindsay with some of his many awards

He worked with Tevin Campbell, Nikita Germain, Johnny Gill, Howard Hewitt, Mica Paris, Shanice, Diatra Hicks, Jay Spencer and Diana Ross; Aretha Franklin, O’Jays, Teddy Pendegrass, Al Jarreau, Regina Bell, Lou Rawls, Spike Lee, Elliot Lewis, Steve Winwood, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Steve Winwood,  Chaka Khan, James Taylor, The Williams Brothers, George Michael, Patti Austin & James Ingram under the direction of Quincy Jones and 18-piece orchestra, Jerry Hey for the Dick Clark Productions and the Lexus Corporation; and a large quantity of jingles for many of popular brands. No wonder that you have the feeling you heard him before even if you just meet Tony Lindsay as a solo artist with: Different Moods (1995), The Message is Love (1997) and his current self-titled project Tony Lindsay (2005).

“Something Beautiful” is a break out hit and Tony Lindsay who is currently touring in Europe will be back with his popular Ray Charles Project, performing at the Sonoma Film Festival at 9pm on March 30th. Catch him if you can. You will feel something beautiful. He is the new king of smooth.

Tony Lindsay live is the best.. here a little excerpt.

Rolando Morales, Vocalist and Guitarist, back stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Don Felder
Rolando Morales, Vocalist and Guitarist, back stage with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Don Felder

March 21, 2019

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

I’ve been putting another private event together for a buddy who used to play bass decades ago with original members of a little band called The Eagles. One of his band mates at the time, lead guitarist Don Felder, composed and played on many of their early hits including “Hotel California.” He’s a 4-time Grammy winner and inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

My buddy invited me to see Don’s show last Monday night in Livermore.  He’s still got it.  Rockin’, crooning and owning the stage.  His solid band (and they sang 5-part harmonies) play with such legends as Kenny Rogers, Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Joni Mitchell and even White Snake, so they brought a spectrum of talents to the table.

I really enjoyed hanging with him afterwards back stage.  We connected and he shared lots of stories and enthusiasm.  Special night.  Sounds like he may swing by our private party, along with some other Eagles…

In the mean time, I have a fun new Quintet public show happening this Saturday night, March 23rd.  My buddy, drummer Pepe Jacobo, invited me to co-lead a band at Nick’s on Grand in South San Francisco from 6-9pm.  He provides himself on drums and his Latin percussionist Mike Ramirez.  I secured my keyboardist Bob Crawford who plays with Pete Escovedo and many more; as well as master bassist Dewayne Pate who played with Arturo Sandoval and so many more.  Throw myself into the mix on guitar and voice, and we’ve got something fun to share with you!  All details are below in the Calendar.  It’s a rare San Francisco Peninsula appearance, so don’t miss this!  www.nicksongrand.com, (650) 989-8452.

There’s more happening next week, including Barone’s in Pleasanton and the Walnut Creek Marriott Lobby Lounge, and even a little recording session.  Details below.

Ciao and see you at the show!

Omar Sousa, Seckou Keita and Gustavo Ovalles will perform at Freight & Salvage on March 21, 2019

Omar Sosa, Seckou Keita, and Gustavo Ovalles perform at Freight & Salvage

Omar Sosa is the master of finding new musical arrangements and instrumental combinations. He is completely free in his compositions of music, rhythms, and sounds.

In January 2019, Sosa and Morelenbaum, released a new CD, Es:sensual, which features the latters vivid arrangements from Omar’s previous Musicall successes including selections from Free Roots (1997), Mulatos (2004), Live FIP (2006), Promise (2007), Across the Divide (2009), and Il (2014).

Morelenbaum and the NDR Bigband chose world class Omar Sosa because he is beloved all around the world due because his compositions and performances are as generous, abundant, and ecstatically as his creative spirit.

Omar Sosa, Seckou Keita & Gustavo Orvalles perform at Freight & Salvage March 20 & 21 2019

At the upcoming performances the band will also perform classics from their Transparent Water album that as the title suggests, Transparent Water is meant to be evocative of translucence and flowing light. It is a deeply spiritual recording that incorporates folk, jazz and sounds from across the planet. It was produced in 2017 here in Oakland by OTA Records.

Es:sensual is also rooted in Afro-Cuban spiritual and percussive traditions, and intimately versed in a range of contemporary world musics, Omars finely textured compositions present Morelenbaum with the foundation to summon forth an expansive palette of sounds, inspiring the NDR Bigbands brilliant soloists, maximizing the ensembles sonic potential, and providing ample latitude for Sosas own luminous keyboard improvisations.

NDR reports: “Es:sensual pays tribute to the majestic figures of Afro-Cuban big-band jazz Frank Machito Grillo, Chico OFarrill, Cachao, Mario Bauz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Chano Pozo, while also drawing inspiration from Cuban luminaries such as Armando de Sequeira Romeu, Peruchn, Pancho Quinto, Lzaro Ros, Lili Martnez, Benny Mor, Arsenio Rodrguez, Rubn Gonzlez, Frank Emilio Flynn, Bebo Valds, and a succeeding generation of artists including Chucho Valds, Paquito DRivera, and the revolutionary conjunto Irakere.”

Interview with the artist about Es:sentual

Hamburg producer Stefan Gerdes of NDR, facilitated the connection between Omar Sosa and Morelenbaum, a celebrated arranger known for his trailblazing work with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Cesria Evora, and Mariza, among many others.

After-gig hike last week before the sun fell

December 18, 2018

¡Hola, Mi Gente!

I finished that challenging 3-week run of 1 to 2 gigs per day.  And lived to tell.  I even threw in that public gig last Saturday with my rock guitarist buddy from Santana, Carlos Hernandez.  We hit it hard at Havana and threw in a bunch of rocking tunes we’d never done before for a packed house.  What a blast.

In the midst of playing and commuting day and night in the urban jungle, I had one rare late afternoon off.  A brief reprieve.  I unloaded my gear, got into my house, changed into some sweats and drove to Chabot about 4:30 and forced my tired body to hit a trail.  It was hard to get going, but after coming into my first view of the water and hills, I felt so much better!  It was like another world.  Peaceful and grounding.  And cold and dark!  I did the last half of my hike in the night under the slivered moon and beneath the sound of owls hooting in the trees.  Magic.

Now my schedule slows to a manageable level.  The only public show I’m doing this week happens this Friday December 21 when I return to Maria, Maria in Danville for the last time this year, indoors from 6-9pm.

And remember I’m also at Havana after Christmas on Saturday December 29 with the Paraguayan violinist Carlos Reyes, who has played with Arturo Sandoval and Steve Miller.  This is your last chance this year to catch us in public (though we’ve been everywhere in private).  Details for both shows below.  Hard to believe that these are the last public shows of the year!  See you there!

Ciao,

Rolando

¡Happy Voting Day, Mi Gente!

I’m on my way out to do the deed.  And if you haven’t already, you should be out there at the polls, too.  The soul of the country will be revealed.  It’s going to be an interesting night…

On the music front there’s only one public show happening this week, but it’s a good one.  This Saturday November 10 at Havana in Walnut Creek, about 8:30-11pm, I’m back with my dear friend Estaire Godinez on Latin percussion and voice.  She’s played with George Benson and Prince.  The last time out, we really stretched into new places.  It was a blast testing out new muscles and surprising the crowd.  We’ll see where we go this time.  We even surprise ourselves!  Details below.

Then in addition to my return next week to Pairings Cellars in Pleasanton on Friday November 16, I’ll also return to Havana on Saturday November 24 when I pair up with the Paraguayan violinist Carlos Reyes, who has played with Arturo Sandoval and Steve Miller.  Anyone who’s seen him knows he’s a force to be reckoned with.  Details for all shows below.

See you on the other side!

Ciao,

Rolando
