¡Hola, mi Gente!

I didn’t think I’d be quoting Oprah, but there you are. Simple and to the point.

I was thinking of the passion I’ve conjured at recent events when there were large groups of people into the music all dancing to my rhythms. At those times, when I’m a soloist, I dig deeper into myself to create that big, danceable sound. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to play the rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass, vocals and play string or horn parts all at the same time. But that I do. And when those smiles, dance moves and screams of delight are aimed my way, then I feel the passion returned and find new energy.

But at those times, I also really miss my band! I’m working on getting something going with them again, maybe next month… I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, here comes your brand new August Calendar. In spite of all the private events I’m doing which do not appear here, I still have a healthy number of public opportunities to catch me, including my new set of shows on some Wednesdays at the Park James Hotel in Menlo Park. Time and milestones keep flying by. Valentine’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Celebrations of Life, Trump found liable for sexual abuse… Hard to keep up with it all!

And now Mother’s Day is already upon us. If you’re like me, you have family spread out across who knows where. Over the years, I haven’t been able to see my familia for quite a while now. But most of us feel our mom’s presence still managing to keep us intact. I know we’ll all finally be able to reunite in June, and I’m very much looking forward to that.

In the meantime, if you’re lucky, you can spend sweet moments with your mom this Sunday, May 14, at La Costanera in Half Moon Bay. Treat her to a Peruvian brunch on the harbor. ¡Hola, mi Gente!

I hate tax season.

But you know what helps me get through it? Hiking. I’m not able to get to those trails as often as I used to with this gig schedule of mine, but after all these rains, it’s interesting to see how many uprooted trees have altered so many trails and parks throughout the Bay Area. What I love about the trails after the phenomenon of these atmospheric rivers is the sound and sights of so many heavily flowing streams throughout parklands. It helps one re-set. If you haven’t done it yet, go seek out a good trail. Your spirit will thank you for it.

My gig schedule continues Wednesday with another big corporate event. Then on Friday, April 21, I’m doing a special lunchtime appearance at Pairing Wine Bar and Restaurant in Pleasanton from 12-3 pm. Don’t come at night! I’ll be there at NOON! If you’re in the area and have an hour or two to kill, swing by for a very enjoyable lunch experience with me. I’ve really enjoyed seeing large groups of friends swinging by to my gigs, all enjoying the company, the music, the sights, and the food. Don’t miss out!

¡Hola, mi Gente!

I spent all day Monday into the evening doing repairs and tech improvements to my music equipment with my dear buddy Carlos Reyes. His knowledge and breadth of experience in the tech side of music are truly a marvel. As a musician, he ain’t too shabby either! I enjoyed putting this new system together with him. There are still a few things to do with it over the next weeks, but I’m excited to try it out for the first time at this weekend’s set of gigs. Our shared past has bridged my road to the future.

We’ve had to make a change in a date we advertised last week. It turns out Pairings Wine Bar & Restaurant in Pleasanton has a buyout on Friday, April 21st, and will be closed to the public that night. BUT, it’s also the day they were going to kick off their Friday lunchtime hours, so I’ll be playing for that instead, the same day, but from 12-3 pm. The new details and poster are below in your calendar.

Remember, too, I’m returning to Elevation LVK in Livermore after a long hiatus on Friday, April 14. Details below.

Hola, mi Gente!

Well, it’s that time, isn’t it! The moment of truth is but a day, or a week, or a month away… It’s been a hell of a ride, but it ain’t over yet. In spite of record-setting voting, the voice of the people has gradually been rendered less effective by voter legislation applied by those in power and supported by conservative appellate and supreme courts. It’s a disturbing trend. Regardless of the outcome, please, let us heed the words and experience of the great Martin Luther King Jr. I pray to God it isn’t too late for national healing and unity.

I’ll continue to do my little bit of healing through music. I have but one public show this week (the rest are private), and it happens this Thursday night November 5, about 7-9:30pm at Massimo’s in Fremont. It’s my only appearance there this month, so if you’re in the area, you’ve got to check it out. Really nice meals and people, great night out. Speaking of causing happiness, I had a nice surprise last Friday when violinist Carlos Reyes sat in with me at Barone’s in Pleasanton. He was impressed with the place and will probably be back again in some capacity.

In the meantime, this Friday October 9 I make my debut at Barranco Cocina Peruana in Lafayette from 5:30-8:30pm. They have an award-winning chef who created a lovely Peruvian menu sure to delight. You’ll have THREE chances to catch me there in October. I haven’t played publicly in Lafayette in a lot of years, so don’t miss it. ¡Hola, mi Gente!

These last couple weeks had me down on the canvass. For those of you who don’t know or didn’t see my Facebook posts, back on August 19, I got hit with a relentless case of vertigo. It hit me about three times in the last 12 or so years. Those episodes were severe, but short-lived. It would usually be over in minutes or a few hours.

But this one was different. This one’s been with me for a few weeks now. For two straight days and nights, it had me stumbling, falling, crawling and retching like a drunk. I was completely incapacitated. Couldn’t eat, couldn’t shower, couldn’t move.

After two days, I was finally able to focus my eyes enough to see my phone screen. I called my doctor and they had me go to ER. My dear buddy Alfredo drove me. They ran a bunch of tests and a CAT scan to rule out stroke and other serious possibilities. They determined it was just a really bad case of vertigo. My ER physician told me he once had it for two straight months! That couldn’t be me!

There is no cure for vertigo. I had to just continue doing the maneuvers I already knew (Epley and others) designed to move an errant crystal out of one of the vestibular canals in the inner ear and back into the canal in which it belongs. In the meantime, the crystal would keep sending false signals to my brain that my environment was moving.

The damned thing wouldn’t leave me. I had to cancel out of two gigs (Barone’s and my debut at Elevation). That was when I posted on Facebook that I couldn’t make the gigs. I turned down some other offers as I was just too messed up.

I kept doing the maneuvers until last Thursday when one of them finally seemed to work. My symptoms began to diminish and I felt like I was getting my life back. I learned from talking to friends that my memory had holes in it from the last few days. I had no recollection of things I had said or done, or were said to me, or even where the conversations had happened. I’m still in a bit of a fog.

I recovered enough to do my first big day out of the house at Barone’s last Saturday. I was a little shaky, but I did the drive, equipment set up and performance. It felt good to accomplish all that, especially in light of the fact that just days before, I could hardly walk.

I’m feeling about 80% now. I just did another private show last night which went great. Now, I’m officially ready for my re-do debut at Elevation LVK in Livermore, happening this Saturday night, September 5, 6:30-9:30pm. I’ll be there on solo guitar and voice and you’re all invited. Details below.

For the last 10 days now, I’ve been doing my performances with a miserable lung virus. It’s been challenging, to say the least. My doctor says it’s the second wave of a nasty virus that’s been around since the beginning of this year and they’re getting inundated with calls and visits from patients. The funny thing is that most audiences couldn’t tell! I’ve learned to hide it and avoid the trouble notes and use great mic technique and extend those driving instrumental sections. At Sunday night’s private event, I even had them dancing into an overtime hour. I really don’t know how I do this…

But I’m so glad I can! I continue tomorrow, Tuesday Sept 3 at a venue I haven’t played in a year. I return to Casa Bella in Sunol from 5-8pm. This private event center will be doing one of these with live music — MAYBE two, depending on next month’s weather, so swing by for the sure date this Tuesday! Thanks to those of you who came out last Saturday to our show, “An Intimate Evening 2019” at the Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate in Oakland. Estaire Godinez lead our great band, Bob Crawford, David Belove, Celso Alberti, Beatrice Godinez and Yours Truly in 2 blazing sets of Latin and Brazilian jazz. We all wished we could do more of this…

For those of you who missed it, I have a public show coming up this Saturday Aug 10 at Havana in Walnut Creek from 9-11:30pm. I’ll be leading Estaire Godinez on Latin percussion and vocals and myself on guitar and vocals through a huge variety of music. I learned some new challenging material for a big show coming up this Saturday night, much in the Brazilian Latin-jazz mode. On Monday we had our one rehearsal and played it for the first time. We’re about ready. With this crew, you can’t go wrong. And you’re invited.

I have a few public shows you’ll want to catch in your new July Calendar. I’m finally starting up some Marriott Walnut Creek shows beginning this Saturday July 6 at 6pm. Details below.

¡Hola, mi Gente!

After my car repairs, I did a few more gigs and then drove down to my mom’s in So Cal last Monday to join my brother visiting with his family from Michigan. They had already been there a week and were finishing up their last 4 days.

My little twin nephews are growing up, getting ready to start high school. Rocco has stretched to 5’9, Vincent about 5’7. Both had been playing a lot of hoops since I saw them last. When I told them over the phone that I was driving down to kick their butts on the basketball court, Rocco just chuckled and said, “I don’t think so.”

A couple days after I got down there, I taught Rocco (guitar) and Vincent (trumpet) an Ennio Morricone piece I arranged for them that morning to play as a duet and played the tune for my mom. They are both already quite accomplished for their ages. I think Rocco is better than I was at his age.

After working a couple hours, Vincent then said, “You wanna go out and play basketball?” They got big smiles and were ready to kick my butt. We went out into the hot sun and I schooled them. They did get a lot better, but they didn’t have a chance. I beat them 1 on 2, then we did about three 2 on 2 games with my brother in different combinations. Then I moved ever so slowly into the house and passed out for about 90 minutes on the couch. To quote Danny Glover in “Lethal Weapon,” “I’m getting too old for this shit.” And that’s an old reference.

I made it back in time for more private shows, including a very special, intimate wedding held on the beach in Montara. It was a heart-warming international gathering of love. It was an honor to play for it.

I have a combination of private and public shows all week. Try not to miss this one: This Friday July 19, 9-11:30pm, I’m finally back with the great keyboardist-vocalist Janice Maxie-Reid at Havana in Walnut Creek. I’ve been flying under the radar yet again, doing more private events throughout La Bahia. That, as well as investing the hours it takes to create these opportunities and bring them to fruition.

I do love flexing my creative muscles to tailor my resources from small intimate parties to large-scale private events. I just did one for about 35 people and am putting things in place for another for about 2,000 people. I’ve been flying under the radar again, doing some private events that really kept me occupied. One kept me jumping for a couple months and we just finished it Saturday night. It was a performance with my 6-piece band, sound and lighting crew. I was proud of my guys: Celso Alberti, David Belove, Omar Ledezma, Drew Youngs, Bob Crawford, and Jeff Cressman running sound. We made our client very, very happy. No small feat, considering he played bass in the early days of the Eagles.

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo, mi Gente!

On Sunday, Mexico and much of the U.S. celebrates Cinco de Mayo, when in 1862 some 4,000 Mexican soldiers obliterated a highly experienced French Army and traitorous Mexican forces of 8,000 in Puebla, just 100 miles east of Mexico City.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew, Emperor Napoleon III, had embarked upon a very aggressive foreign policy claiming territories in Algeria, Indochina, Lebanon and more with an army that had not been defeated in 50 years, including the Crimean War. He detested the United States and had designs on ruling over a new empire in neighboring Mexico. The French feared no one, including the U.S. which was embroiled in its own Civil War. (The French were also positioning themselves to provide arms to the Confederate Rebels.) And so with the finest modern equipment and up to date fashion (they were French after all), they invaded Mexico.

They got more than they bargained for in Puebla. Instead of being showered with flowers by the conservative clerical town, they were out-maneuvered by General Porfirio Diaz’ men. The French shot off half their ammunition in less than two hours. The battles ended with much of the French cavalry killed or wounded, chased on horseback through rain and mud, and with many dodging stampeding cattle and Indians armed only with machetes.

The French tried again over a year later. This time, the Union forces were rushed to the border after their victory over the Confederates to assist the Mexicanos in expelling the French. Perhaps this is one reason why thousands of Mexicanos crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. armed forces. And why so many again flooded American consulates with phone calls during the Persian Gulf War trying to enlist to fight for America.

This little history lesson is something to think about when we witness the thousands of Latin American families risking their lives today to seek help in our country, only to confront oppressive executive orders that separate their family members and penalize them at their most dire time of need. The ideals of freedom, liberty and upholding the fundamental values of human dignity should be celebrated in this country and shared by us all. Ajua!

Something tells me not many people will be thinking about this during my big Cinco de Mayo weekend of double-header gigs. And that’s fine! We’re out to have fun!

I haven’t played at Maria, Maria in over 4 months, but I’ll be there at Maria, Maria in Danville on Saturday May 4 from 12-3pm, where I’ll be kicking off the festivities out on the patio for revelers enjoying tequila, margaritas, comida Mexicana and my tailored repertoire. And I follow that the same night with an appearance at the Walnut Creek Marriott from 6-9pm. Details below.

Then on Cinco de Mayo, Sunday May 5th, I continue at Maria, Maria in Danville on the patio again from Noon to 3pm. Lot’s of fun to be had there! And the same night, I shoot across the pond to the Tavern on 4th in San Rafael, the newly renovated and shiny new watering hole and live music venue for some Latin sounds, drinks and dancing. I played there last year for this event and they invited me back, so all you North Bay fans, come out and join me! Details below.
