World Book and Copyright Day

Since 1996, World Book and Copyright Day has been celebrated on 23 April to honour books, widely recognized as invaluable cornerstones of societies’ educational, cultural and social systems. The present year, proclaimed “2008, International Year of Languages” by the United Nations General Assembly, provides an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the linguistic aspects of books, which constitute a means of expression nourished by and through language. Language creates, beholds and influences culture. Books and Reading Comprehension are an important part of civilization. It furthers understanding and can expand the world view in a substantial way.

We found it somewhat surprising that the three most popular books on the non-fiction best seller list have a spiritual element to it. People are seeking for meaning and magic in their life. We added two books that give inspiration of the practical kind. Barbara Stanny, a world leader in finanancial advice and women's empowerment. We found a self-published book by a couple of therapists who have been happily married and give advice on how to create a stable and loving relationship. Next we found some interesting tid bits about reading, reading comprehension and statistics that may surprise you.

Health

U.S. National Institutes of Health says. Some studies show that it may help prevent heart disease, stroke, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. You should always talk to your doctor about what's an appropriate amount for you. The NIH site womenshealth.gov offers these general guidelines about folic acid: Women who are able to become pregnant should take 400 micrograms of folic acid each day. Pregnant women need 600 micrograms daily. Breast-feeding women need 500 micrograms daily. Women who have had a baby with certain birth defects -- such as spina bifida or anencephaly -- and who want to have another baby should check with their doctor. These women may need as much as 4,000 micrograms of folic acid per day. Women who have had a baby with these birth defects and who do not plan to have another baby should take 400 micrograms daily.
