Legally Blynd Live in Oakland 2007

featuring Jubu
hosted by Greg Bridges,
produced by Eddie L. Lankford Jr.

Legally Blynd is amazing! They are a real band! Greg Bridges has dedicated this Reflections in Rhythm show to introduce Legally Blynd. This band has the skills to play anything they want. Their musical range is wide and deep. They songs touch the audience on every level. They explain the reason why they chose the name Legally Blynd is that they believe that it reflects their desire to show off their abilities in every type of genre of music. While their next album will be more of a Rhythm & Blues style - they allowed us a glimpse of their wide range of influences, R&B, Gospel, Blues, Soul. When Greg Bridges asks them who their influences are they mention James Brown, Al Green, Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elvis Presley - they agree that as long as it touches, their music is heartfelt, everything they do is heartfelt. Even when writing songs the core of their music is that it is heartfelt. They explain that Legally Blynd is a self contained band. They say it is time to get back to some real organic music. Legally Blynd has a distinct style of their own - they remind us of Johnny Cash, Hootie & the Blowfish, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, B.B.King but always Legally Blynd.

The first song "We're gonna party!" is reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughn and shows off their flawless ability to groove with the very, very best of them. This is an instant classic. The next song "I'm gonna leave you baby." is so catchy that you feel you've heard the song before - even if you didn't. Aside of Legally Blynd's ability to get you into the groove it really shows off the organ player. "I'm still in love with you" is romantic and shows off the interplay of the guitars and organ, but it also provides wonderful harmonies. Jubu's solo brings it to a great close.

In the middle of the show is very sweet ballad about family life, "I call it my life." It evokes feelings similar to Louis Armstrong's "It's a wonderful world".

"I can't see you, because I love my baby" is a true love song with wonderful harmonies and a lovely performance by Jubu that sounded slightly countryish. The song is so pure that by the end of the song you feel also in love - even if you are single and don't know with whom.

"My Sunshine" feels - it makes you feel bittersweet - the love in this song flows very strongly. Jubu is able to transmit his feelings like perhaps Eric Clapton after his son passed away. The band sings and creates harmonies that feel like a prayer. The guitar solo "cries" this song transforms. This song is a hit.

"Gotta get away" cruises and they are back in that Legally Blynd groove. I great song to listen to when riding down the highway - a great R&B song.

Near the end the romantic song "Stuck in Between" evokes the pain the singer feels when he is unsure which of the two women he loves he should choose. One had left him telling him that is was over and after he got into a new relationship the first woman comes back. Anyone who ever has gone through a break-up of a relationship will feel this song deeply. The harmonies are truly heartfelt. The back up singers voice truly shines.

The show is ended with with "Why are you untrue?" This R&B song is Legally Blynd - through and through - modern and classic both at the same time. Thankfully this band is just getting started - because they leave you wanting more. The show was simply too short.

Eric Smith (Bassist) has worked with: P. Diddy, Jamie Foxx, Rihanna, Lalah Hathaway (MD), Fantasia Barrino (MD), Destiny's Child, TLC, Raphael Saadiq (MD), Jessica Simpson, Mya, Jill Scott, Anastacia, Darius Rucker, Babyface, Jon B. (MD), Deborah Cox, Mary Mary (MD), Sheila Escovedo, Teena Marie, Willa Ford, Kenny Lattimore, Rahsaan Patterson, Faith Evans, JC Chasez (N'Sync), Tevin Campbell, and Brownstone to name a few.

John "Jubu" Smith (Guitar/Lead Vocalist) is one of the most sought after talents in the music industry today, it's hard to name an R&B act without mentioning John "Jubu" Smith in the same sentence. The songwriting and musical genius has been in demand since he began he career in the early 90's has worked with: Nelly, Whitney Houston, Tweet, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige,Tony Toni Tone, Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Jody Watley, Lalah Hathaway, Hootie & The Blowfish, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, Rahsaan Patterson, Kenny Lattimore, Angie Stone and Tweet, Deborah Cox, Joi, Mary Mary, Eightball & MJG, Mario, Anointed, CeCe Winans, 702. He co-write projects with multi-platinum producers Warren Campbell and Keith Crouch, and Tony Toni Tone's Raphael Saadiq. Jubu was born in New Brunswick, NJ to two talented parents. His mother, Claudette sings and plays the piano. His Father, John T. Smith sings and plays bass and guitar. Jubu and his younger brother Eric grew up around and inside music. He began playing bass at the age of 4, but always loved the "light" of the guitar. His harmonic and melodic ear lead him to follow in his fathers footsteps.

His playing and composing have also left an indelible mark on Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. He continues to delight MAZE fans every concert during his solo on "Golden Day of Time" Nonetheless, he still manages to be a leader in the up and coming bands (Stellar Award winning) Soul Seekers, and Legally Blynd. Jubu plays a 69' sunburst strat through an ameg rocket reverb amp...

Ron Smith (Drummer) is a legend in the Bay Area. He has worked with: Ledisi, Goapele, The Braxton Brothers, Mike Marshall & Timex Social Club, Barry Finnerty, Sista Monica, E.C. Scott, Jon Hammond, Ron Hacker, Bop City, Jungle Biskit, Alphabet Soup, Mark karan Band, & so on. He is also the drummer on The Gospel Hummingbirds "Live In Paradise" album. I don't believe there is a drummer alive that can play the "Blues Shuffle" like this cat. AMAAAAAAAAAAAZING!

The band has graced the stage with Rahsaan Patterson, Lalah Hathaway, Rochelle Farrell, Rahael Saadiq, & Dwayne Wiggins.

Legally Blynd has played at The Joint, Cozy's, Q's Lounge, The Vault, The Temple Bar, Jeffrey's Inner Circle, & other clubs.
